It may seem early, but now is the time (even as you are still gathering your volunteers) to start planning your volunteer training. Early training prepares volunteers to lead with confidence—giving them clear expectations and plans. Children blossom in such an environment. In short, everyone benefits.
First, don’t get overwhelmed. As VBS Director, you are responsible for volunteer training, but you don’t have to lead it all by yourself. Instead, make training a team effort by asking your Pastor, Director of Christian Education, teachers, or other qualified persons to help. Your Director’s Guide offers a wealth of information about volunteer training. You’ll find a training agenda, a training script, and much more for your volunteer training kick-off meeting.
As you recruit your site leaders, provide them with their Leader Guide and other materials as soon as you can. This gives them plenty of time to prepare, especially if they are helping with the volunteer training. This is also a good time to pull together your shopping list and order the supplies that are needed for each site, such as crafts, student leaflets, and other student essentials.
Help your site leaders and volunteers familiarize themselves with Barnyard Roundup with our online site rotation videos. There, they can find, respective to their site, sample leader guides, photo albums, job descriptions, how-to videos, and decorating helps. And, since it’s all online, your volunteers can get familiar with each site at their own convenience.
Speaking of VBS site rotation, now is a good time to think about decorating those sites! We’ve helped you get started by providing a training site designed just for the decorator. We’ve also included the decorating posters and farm critters right in your starter kit. By starting early, you can think about how you might repurpose previous VBS decorations, borrow farm-related items from your congregation, or shop thrift shops and yard sales for those special gems. And of course, our one-stop shop offers plenty of farm-fresh resources to immerse kids in the theme and point them to Jesus.
As you continue recruiting your VBS volunteers, remember that God provides everything you need as you prepare to share His saving love with His children.
