After you determine where your VBS space will be, it’s time to think about decorating! While there are numerous resources at our one-stop shop (and lots of posters in your starter kit), additional items are needed to bring your VBS theme to life. Think medieval. You never know who might own a royal looking chair, a knight statue, goblets, medieval looking shields, ivy, fancy cloth, or other related décor.
Stretch those decorating dollars.
Ask congregation members for help! They want to be involved. Just publicize your list of needs in your church newsletters, bulletins, website, and bulletin boards, and ask people to purchase or lend items. You can find Print Supply Request Tags found on the Director CD. Write down the items you need on the tags. Hang them on a themed bulletin board or at your registration table display. Invite people to claim a tag, promising to purchase or lend the item(s).
Collect donations in boxes placed in a visible location. Keep your supply lists updated wherever you publish them! Check garage sales, thrift shops, estate sales, and church storage areas for needed objects. Use the Internet to find bargains on all kinds of decor and supplies. You can also ask for donations or loans from local businesses. Provide a fun promissory note and return borrowed items promptly.
Ask for help and make it fun.
Be sure to enlist help for making your medieval décor. Invite all of your crafty friends to a decorating party to make murals and other items, too. Connect with other churches using Mighty Fortress to share ideas or decorating items. Meet other Directors on our Facebook page (CPH VBS) and other social networking sites. Contact our firstname.lastname@example.org to identify possible partner church’s in your area. Remember, don’t get overwhelmed. Remember to borrow; ask for help; and, keep it fun. You’ll have your space decorated before you know it!
